Wetlands are among the most productive and biodiverse ecosystems in the world, but also among the most threatened by human activities. These environments, in addition to hosting an extraordinary variety of animal and plant species, provide numerous ecosystem services useful for our survival, such as the regulation of water resources, flood mitigation, CO2 storage and filtering of numerous pollutants.

To protect all ecosystems included in the macro-group of wetlands, the Ramsar Convention was established: the first and only intergovernmental treaty dedicated to the sustainable use and conservation of these environments and their biodiversity at a global level. Currently signed by over 150 countries, the convention commits signatories to promote responsible use of wetlands and water resources present in their territories, through national plans, policies, regulations, management actions and public awareness activities.

Precisely with the aim of increasing public awareness of the importance of wetlands, World Wetlands Day was established. Every year, on February 2, this anniversary is celebrated with numerous events around the world, some of which are funded by the French Agency for Biodiversity (OFB), including outreach activities, exhibitions, educational projects and excursions.

Among the organizers of these initiatives, an important role is played by MedWet: The Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative. Established in 1991, MedWet is an intergovernmental network that connects 27 Mediterranean and peri-Mediterranean countries adhering to the Ramsar Convention, as well as several specialized organizations. Its main objective is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Mediterranean wetlands, ensuring respect and trust between governments, civil society and the scientific community.

The theme of World Wetlands Day 2025 – “Protecting wetlands for our common future“ – aims to highlight the link between the conservation of these threatened ecosystems and a sustainable future, underlining their crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity.

Also this year, K’ Nature is proud to be among the entities supported by MedWet in the organization of an educational-informative event that focuses on the role played by these ecosystems. On February 6, we will present a Pub Quiz on the theme of wetlands. The evening will be held in the welcoming setting of the Ennò Bar in Naples, in Via Vincenzo Bellini 43, and will serve to bring a heterogeneous audience closer to the topics covered.

The event will be divided into two main phases. The first part includes a scientific talk held by members of K’ Nature, experts in ecology and conservation, who will guide participants to discover the importance of wetlands. During the talk, key topics will be explored such as the ecological role played by these habitats, the most fascinating species that populate them and the threats that compromise their survival, without forgetting the economic opportunities that these ecosystems offer, for example through sustainable tourism and nature photography. After this introduction, the atmosphere will become more playful (and competitive), thanks to the organization of a Pub Quiz. Participants, divided into teams, will test the knowledge acquired, challenging each other in a competition that will focus on questions on the scientific themes and environmental curiosities discussed.

Following the example of initiatives such as Pint of Science, the event aims to create an informal occasion where the public can learn and have fun, interacting directly with conservation professionals. And, for the winning team, there will be a small gift: the opportunity to try (almost in preview) our new beer!

Thanks to the collaboration between K’ Nature, Milvus Brewery and Ennò Bar, this event represents a unique opportunity to spend an evening in the company of friends and broaden your horizons (and try new beers!). The appointment is for February 6, 2025: we are waiting for you!
