Despite the name, from the Greek άορνος (without birds), the Lake Avernus represents a very important nesting and wintering site for many aquatic bird species and a strategic stopover point for migratory birdlife.

In fact, this volcanic lake is part of the Natura 2000 network, established to guarantee the long-term maintenance of natural habitats and endangered species of flora and fauna.

If the main focus is on birdwatching, there will be opportunities to observe plants and other animals that populate the lake and its surroundings.
